Our process

How do you want to feel when you step into your garden space? Does your space give you a sense of peace and calm? Is it inviting? Cozy? Do your friends and family linger around the table during long summer evenings?

At Harmony Garden Design, our mission is to partner with you to create the space of your dreams. Whatever your garden goals, we have the experience, dedication and ingenuity to make your dream space a reality.

It starts with a phone call...

What is your vision? We'll discuss your project and your overall goals. Since it's helpful to see the space, we'll also make an appointment for an in-person consultation.

Let's meet!

Our in-person meeting is a great time for us to get to know you, get a sense of your style and, more importantly, take a look at your space. We'll talk more in-depth about the project and discuss the elements that you want to include. It's also a good time to discuss the budget for your project. Keep in mind that you are investing in your home's value as well as its beauty. This meeting is $300 and usually lasts about an hour and a half to two hours.

From this meeting we will provide you with a design work estimate. This can be anywhere from $800-$4,000, depending on the size and scope of the project.

Let's survey your site!

Our team will make an appointment to thoroughly measure, photograph and note major structures, trees, viewpoints and other permanent features to be incorporated into the design. This can take several hours, depending on the size and scope of the project. You do not need to be on hand for this. Simply allow us access to the areas we will be focusing on. This is included in the estimated cost of the design work.

Let's design something beautiful and functional for you!

We produce a preliminary design and mood board for you (usually about a two-week process). At our next meeting, we will go over the design together and make any changes needed. We will also discuss plant and material choices and color schemes at this time. From this meeting a detailed concept design will be produced, complete with plant schedules, design drawings, and any needed construction drawings.

Let's install your new garden!

Our contractor will visit the project and be furnished with the design and detailed instructions on the installation. He will provide a separate estimate for the installation work. Upon approval, your project will go into the contractor's calendar. If permits are needed, you can either complete that on your own, or we can provide that service for you for a fee. We will schedule all specialist contractors needed, as well as delivery of materials and plants, and keep you informed every step of the way on the progress of the project. Upon completion of your project, we will provide you with all plant care and maintenance information.

Let's keep in touch!

Plants need time to establish and get comfortable in their new environments. At six months and again at one year, we will visit your garden to see how it is progressing. Gardens are never static but are living things always changing in ways we cannot predict. These visits allow us to see how all the plants and the hardscape are faring and correct any potential issues early. At the one-, two- and five-year mark, we will also ask permission to take photographs to share online and on our website. These photos provide valuable pictorial information on the life cycle of your garden. We also provide fine gardening maintenance packages which include pruning of small trees and shrubs, cutting back of flowering shrubs, grasses and perennials and mulching in the winter and early spring months. Feel free to ask us about these services.

We hope to keep you as a member of our partnership for the lifetime of your garden. Our designs are meant to grow with you and your needs. When dreams change, we are here to make that happen!
