My process

Where do we start?

We start with a free phone consultation. I will ask what your overall goals are for your space and some general questions about your lifestyle (kids, pets, etc.) We can then set up a time for me to come visit your space in person.

This in-person visit is $300. You and I will go over the space in detail and I will ask more in-depth questions about features and other elements you may want in your garden. This may include some quick sketching by me to help convey my initial ideas about your space. These are just rough drawings and are a way to brainstorm together. This visit usually takes about two hours.

Next steps:

After our in-person visit, and if you decide you would like to work with me, I will send you a contract with my design fee. After receiving your signed contract, I will get started on your project. This includes:

  • Measuring your entire yard

  • Taking pictures from various viewpoints

  • Noting the sun and shade areas of your yard

  • Taking a soil sample, if necessary

  • Noting elevation changes (Sometimes I will need to hire a geo-tech engineer to give me a detailed topographical map. You will be responsible for this expense.)

  • Locating all hose bibs, irrigation points and outside electrical outlets

  • Noting any views or privacy concerns from neighbors

Taking all this information back to my studio, I will draw up a base map and a design concept to share with you in about two weeks' time.

The design concept presentation:

When we meet to go over the design concept(s), I will bring a scale drawing of the design concept and a mood board of possible elements, materials and plant ideas. At this point, we can decide if we need to make any changes. We will also discuss color palettes and other details such as furniture and containers.

I will then take the drawings back to my studio, make any changes, add a detailed plant schedule and placement on the plan and get the concept back to you, usually within a week. At this time, we can decide if you want me to lead the installation.

Installation:

I work with a couple of independent contractors with whom I have a strong relationship of several years. Installation will be billed separately by the contractors while I will bill separately for my creative oversight, plant procurement and placement, materials selection and procurement and other time related to your project. Depending on the size of the project, I will provide you with a payment schedule. Most projects are billed at 50% before work gets started and 50% upon completion.

During the installation, I will be on site every step of the way to make sure the project goes smoothly and according to my specifications. I will be your liaison and work with all the contractors on the team to accomplish the work and leave the area clean and tidy at the end of the day.

Upon completion, I will walk with you through the project, water or check the irrigation timer, and take some pictures.

6 month and 1-year check-ins:

At around 6 months after the installation, I will visit your garden to see how it is progressing. We can discuss any plants that are having trouble or other issues that have come up. I will take pictures and take some notes for my records. Likewise, I will visit your garden a year after installation to see how the space is maturing, check on any plants that are not thriving, and give any additional feedback on maintenance or care. I will take pictures as well and may ask for permission to feature your garden on my website.
